Sowore Joins Forces with Other Candidates to Challenge Tinubu Ahead of 2027

African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has aligned with two other opposition aspirants in a fresh bid to present a stronger alternative to President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.

Sowore, Adewole Adebayo of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim of the Accord Party reached the understanding after a meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The three candidates said they would work together to mobilise Nigerians against what they described as growing threats to democracy, economic hardship, and insecurity.

In a joint position, they warned that the country risked moving toward “a coronation disguised as an election” if the opposition remained fragmented. They also called for the release of certain political detainees and an end to what they termed the persecution of Sowore over his political activities.

Sowore, a long-time activist and publisher, is contesting the presidency for the third consecutive time under the AAC. He has maintained a radical, people-powered campaign style, focusing on equal rights, justice, anti-corruption, free education, and systemic change. As campaigns officially opened on August 19, he urged Nigerians to reject decades of failed leadership and vote for a new direction.

The AAC has said it will run a people-funded campaign rather than relying on wealthy donors. Sowore’s platform continues to emphasise security without negotiation with bandits, reliable electricity, job creation, true federalism, and free quality healthcare and education.

While the three candidates have agreed to align their forces, they noted that further consultations would determine the final structure and possible joint candidate of any broader alliance.

Sowore’s decision to join forces with Adebayo and Olawepo-Hashim shows that smaller opposition parties are exploring cooperation outside the main Atiku-Obi contest.
