Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race has entered a decisive early phase following the official lifting of the campaign ban by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on August 19. With just five months to the January 16, 2027 election, the contest is shaping up as a three-way battle between incumbent President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The opening days have already highlighted deep divisions within the opposition. While Tinubu’s campaign is leveraging the advantages of incumbency and focusing on the long-term benefits of his economic reforms — including subsidy removal and exchange-rate adjustments — both Atiku and Obi have centred their messages on the immediate cost-of-living crisis and persistent insecurity.

Atiku has taken a confrontational approach, criticising the removal of the petrol subsidy and promising to restore it if elected. Obi, meanwhile, continues to emphasise production over consumption, accountability, and measurable results, arguing that Nigeria’s large population should be an economic strength rather than a burden.

Calls for opposition cooperation have intensified. The NDC has publicly urged Atiku to step aside and support Obi in order to present a stronger challenge to the ruling party. Atiku has so far given no indication of withdrawing, while earlier coalition efforts between the two camps collapsed before gaining traction. Analysts note that a divided opposition risks splitting the anti-incumbent vote in a country where public dissatisfaction with living costs and security remains high.

President Tinubu, for his part, is campaigning on continuity and the claim that painful reforms are beginning to yield results. His party controls a large majority of state governorships, giving the APC a significant organisational edge.

Security remains another critical flashpoint. Attacks in parts of the North and Middle Belt continue to dominate headlines, with voters increasingly linking political leadership to the ability to protect lives and restore stability.
