The Anambra State Police Command has recorded a major operational success with the neutralisation of two suspected kidnappers and armed robbers, even as the Commissioner of Police has ordered a full investigation into a separate shooting incident at the Onitsha Head Bridge.

Neutralisation of Suspects

In the early hours of Wednesday, 19 August 2026, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, acting on credible intelligence, moved to Eziowelle Road in Idemili North Local Government Area.
They had received information that a group of suspected armed robbers and kidnappers was operating in the area.

Upon sighting the police team, the suspects allegedly opened fire and attempted to escape. A gun battle ensued.
Two of the suspects sustained fatal gunshot injuries and were neutralised, while other members of the gang fled with varying degrees of wounds.
Police recovered one AK-47 rifle (with a magazine containing four live rounds), one pump-action gun, and five live cartridges from the scene.
Commissioner of Police Nnanna Oji Ama commended the officers for their courage and professionalism.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to sustained intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and protecting residents across the state.
Efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining members of the gang.

Head Bridge Shooting Probe

Onitsha Head Bridge (Ogbogwu/Ọgbọ Ọgwụ Market area) led to tension.
A confrontation between police officers and members of the public resulted in gunshot injuries to some individuals.
This sparked a protest that temporarily blocked the busy Onitsha-Asaba Expressway.

CP Nnanna Oji Ama personally visited the scene, addressed the crowd, and appealed for calm.

He later visited the injured victims in hospital, assured them of the Command’s support, and pledged that their medical expenses would be fully covered.

The Commissioner has ordered a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the discharge of the firearm.

He has also summoned the Onitsha Area Commander and all Divisional Police Officers in the area for a high-level supervisory meeting focused on accountability and professional standards.
The situation around the Head Bridge has since been de-escalated, with normal traffic restored.

The Anambra State Police Command continues to emphasise its dual focus on combating violent crime while upholding professionalism and respect for human life.
